Recent Events
The Event Foundation Team worked closely with the three Royal Navy Field Gun Associations on the COMMAND100 project.
2007 marked the centenary of the first Inter Command Field Gun Competition, staged at the Royal Naval and Military Tournament at Olympia. COMMAND100 was setup to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the first competition in 1907.
From its earliest days, the Inter Command Field Gun Competition was held in high regard by the general public as well as serving and former members of the Royal Navy. The competition went through a number of different formats between 1907 and 1950 however qualities of the Field Gunner remained the same: Strength, Stamina and above all Teamwork.
From 1950 until 1999, the Inter Command Field Gun Competition was the centrepiece of the Royal Tournament at Earls Court. The final competitive run was held on 2nd August 1999 at the last performance of the Royal Tournament.
The team were closely involved in the communication, support and delivery of the centenary dinner, held at the Pained Hall in Greenwich on 28th July 2007. The event brought together representatives of the Portsmouth, Devonport and Fleet Air Arm Field Gun Associations for the first time since 1999. Representatives of the Chatham Field Gun Crew (disbanded in 1960) also attended.
350 ex-Field Gunners, friends and family attended the dinner. Music for the evening was provided by the Band of the 5th Cadet Battalion Royal Welsh Regiment along with a Guard of Honour from members of T.S. Cardiff Cadet Field Gun Crew. The record breaking field gun from the 1999 Royal Tournament was also taken to Greenwich for the occasion.
Speakers during the dinner included former Field Gunners from Portsmouth, Devonport, Fleet Air Arm and Chatham Associations as well as Major Sir Michael Parker, Producer of the Royal Tournament from 1974-99. Mr Basil Reitz, the voice of the Royal Tournament for 41 years from 1958 until 1999 also provided the commentary for the evening.
